Severe rainfall triggered major flooding in the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch areas of the Grand Canyon. Floodwaters swept people, large boulders and debris into the Colorado River, while authorities continue search and evacuation operations.
Body of 46-year-old man recovered
The US National Park Service said the body of a 46-year-old man was recovered near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River.
Around 15 people remain missing or unaccounted for. Authorities have asked anyone with information about those individuals to come forward.
62 people evacuated
At least 62 people were evacuated following the flood, while efforts are continuing to evacuate around 50 more. No injuries have been reported so far.
Footbridges destroyed, creek landscape altered
Flooding along Bright Angel Creek destroyed footbridges and significantly changed the surrounding landscape. The creek bed widened, while the force of the water appeared to create a new river rapid.
Bright Angel Campground, Phantom Ranch and parts of the North Kaibab Trail were closed, while rafting activities on the Colorado River were temporarily suspended.
Main water pipeline damaged
The flood also damaged the main water pipeline serving residents and tourists in the area. With drinking water supplies restricted, tourists will not be allowed to stay overnight at accommodation facilities inside the park. Residents have also been urged to conserve water.
