Car plows into pedestrians in France! 1 dead, 10 injured

A deadly incident occurred near the train station in Caen, France, when a car drove into a group of pedestrians. Authorities said the driver deliberately targeted the crowd after an earlier fight.

Seven people seriously injured

Calvados Prefect David Clavière said one person was killed, while seven others suffered serious injuries and three were less seriously hurt.

All of the injured were reported to be men between the ages of 17 and around 40. According to witness accounts, the person who died was believed to be an Afghan man aged 18 or 19.

Suspect arrested 20 kilometers away

The driver fled after the incident but was arrested by police in Ouistreham, around 20 kilometers from Caen.

Authorities said the 26-year-old suspect was born in Russia. He was not known to intelligence services and had previously come to police attention only for traffic-related offenses.

Murder investigation launched

The suspect was taken into custody as authorities opened an investigation into murder and intentional violence with a weapon.

Investigators are examining surveillance camera footage, while forensic teams have also carried out evidence collection at the scene.

No indication of a terrorist motive

Prosecutors in Caen said the investigation was still at an early stage but that, based on the information currently available, there was no indication that the incident was motivated by terrorism.
