A powerful earthquake hit Peru’s southern Andes, causing widespread shaking across the country. The epicenter was located 38 kilometers northwest of Upahuacho, while initial assessments found no reports of casualties or major damage. Peruvian authorities also said there was no tsunami threat.
Two agencies report different magnitudes
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.7 and occurred at a depth of 66.7 kilometers.
Peru’s Geophysical Institute, however, measured the quake at magnitude 7.2.
The earthquake was felt across southern and central Peru, including the regions of Ica and Arequipa, as well as the capital Lima.
No damage reported so far
Civil Defense officials said no damage had been reported in the initial checks. Authorities in Parinacochas province also said they had not received reports of destruction or casualties.
The Peruvian Navy confirmed that the earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat.
Peru lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” one of the world’s most seismically active regions. In 2007, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake in the Ica region killed nearly 600 people.
