Tensions between the United States and Cuba came to the forefront at the United Nations General Assembly after President Donald Trump sharply criticized the Cuban government. As Trump said Washington was seeking major change in Cuba, members of the Cuban delegation left the hall while his speech was still underway.
“We are seeking fundamental change in Cuba”
Speaking at the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Trump claimed that Cuba’s communist government was under greater pressure than ever before.
Trump said his administration was seeking a fundamental change in the situation in Cuba and argued that the country’s current system had failed.
Marco Rubio is leading the talks
Trump also said contacts between Washington and Havana were continuing, adding that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was handling the negotiations.
“Marco Rubio is handling the negotiations. He is deeply involved in negotiations with Cuba. We’ll see what happens,” Trump said.
“Communism will never come to America, but freedom will come to Cuba”
Continuing his criticism of Havana, Trump alleged that the Cuban government was cooperating with various left-wing and communist groups.
Citing a report by the U.S. State Department, Trump also claimed that the Cuban government had ties with the Communist Party USA and ANTIFA.
“Communism will never come to America, but freedom will come to Cuba. Security will come to Cuba and Mexico,” Trump said.
Cuban delegation walks out
Following Trump’s remarks on Cuba, members of the Cuban delegation in the General Assembly hall protested by leaving the meeting.
The delegation walked out while the U.S. president was still delivering his speech.
