Netanyahu displays pager at UN podium: “Hezbollah certainly remembers”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly featured a striking moment. After numerous delegations left the hall in protest, Netanyahu continued his address and displayed a pager from the podium, referring to the 2024 explosions involving devices used by Hezbollah members in Lebanon.

Netanyahu held up a pager in the hall

During his speech, Netanyahu picked up a pager and showed it to delegates in the UN General Assembly hall.

At that moment, Netanyahu said, “Do you remember the pagers? Hezbollah certainly remembers.”

His remarks were seen as a reference to the simultaneous explosions involving pagers used by Hezbollah members in Lebanon on September 17, 2024.

Several delegations walked out

Before and during Netanyahu’s speech, representatives of several countries left the UN General Assembly hall to protest Israel’s attacks on Gaza.

Netanyahu continued his address after the walkout left large sections of the hall empty.

Pagers exploded simultaneously in Lebanon

On September 17, 2024, simultaneous explosions involving pagers used by Hezbollah members in Lebanon killed 12 people, including two children, and injured around 2,800 others. About 300 of the injured were reported to be in serious condition.

A day later, on September 18, the explosion of numerous walkie-talkies across the country killed 25 people and injured more than 450 others.

Claims over the devices’ production came into focus

Taiwan-based Gold Apollo, whose name appeared on the exploded pagers, pointed to its Hungary-based partner BAC Consulting KFT as the company that manufactured the devices.

According to a report by The New York Times, unnamed officials claimed that BAC Consulting had been established by Israel as a front company.

The report also alleged that Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, Mossad, began planning the operation in 2022. A former senior Iranian official also claimed that Israel had attempted a similar method in Iran and had placed explosives inside Iranian nuclear equipment.
