What Happened in Türkiye This Week? September 28- October 5, 2026

What Happened in Türkiye: September 28 – October 5, 2026
Türkiye experienced another busy week between September 28 and October 5, with developments ranging from the economy and inflation to legal investigations, earthquakes and major developments at Beşiktaş.
Here are some of the most important events that shaped the agenda in Türkiye during the week.
Türkiye’s Annual Inflation Falls Below 30%
One of the most closely watched developments of the week came from the Turkish economy.
Türkiye’s annual consumer inflation fell to 29.73% in September, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) on October 5. Consumer prices increased by 1.84% month-on-month, while producer prices rose by 2.07%.
The annual inflation rate fell below 30% for the first time since November 2021. The data also set the October rent increase rate at 31.49%, based on the 12-month average inflation figure.
Mersin Investigation Moves to the Courthouse
A major legal development came from Mersin, where a corruption investigation led to the detention of several local officials.
Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Vahap Seçer, Yenişehir Mayor Abdullah Özyiğit and Mezitli Mayor Ahmet Serkan Tuncer were among 59 suspects referred to the courthouse on October 5 after being detained as part of an investigation launched by the Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The judicial process was still continuing as the week came to an end.
Beşiktaş Holds a Turbulent General Assembly
Beşiktaş was one of the biggest stories in Turkish sports during the week, but the club’s general assembly also attracted attention because of its financial and administrative agenda.
At the club’s ordinary administrative and financial general assembly, President Serdal Adalı and his board were discharged for the 2025-26 period. Members also approved the club’s new financial budget.
Beşiktaş’s financial situation was another major topic. The club’s total liabilities were reported at approximately 27.5 billion Turkish lira as of May 31, 2026.
Serdal Adalı Re-Elected as Beşiktaş President
The developments continued on October 4 with an extraordinary election at Beşiktaş.
Serdal Adalı entered the election as the only presidential candidate and was re-elected after receiving 3,815 of the 3,910 votes cast. His new administration will remain in office until May 2028.
The election came just one day after the club’s ordinary general assembly, making Beşiktaş one of the most closely followed stories in Türkiye throughout the weekend.

Beşiktaş Congress Takes Center Stage in Turkish Sports Agenda
In Turkey, one of the most prominent highlights on the sports agenda was the general assembly process at Beşiktaş. At the Ordinary Administrative and Financial General Assembly held on October 3 at the Haliç Congress Center, the board led by Serdal Adalı was acquitted by a majority vote for both administrative and financial matters covering the period from June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026. Meanwhile, the club’s announced total debt reached 27,521,043,733 Turkish Liras.
The assembly also voted on the expulsion of former presidential candidate Hürser Tekinoktay. The motion submitted to members was approved, effectively terminating Tekinoktay’s membership with Beşiktaş. The decision sparked widespread debate within the Beşiktaş community.
It was reported that Tekinoktay had previously submitted a comprehensive defense containing sharp critiques of the club’s financial and administrative policies. As differing evaluations emerged regarding the grounds for expulsion and the procedure followed, the club notably refrained from disclosing the final vote tally for the expulsion decision, in which an estimated 1,500 out of nearly 40,000 eligible members cast their votes.
In the Extraordinary Elective General Assembly held on October 4, Serdal Adalı was re-elected as president, securing 3,815 votes as the sole candidate. Out of 39,500 eligible voting members, a total of 3,910 cast their ballots. While Adalı’s tenure as president continues, the expulsion of Tekinoktay “whose voting and candidacy rights had been suspended prior to the election, thereby blocking his candidacy for the BJK presidency” remained one of the most contentious and widely discussed issues of the week within the club.
An interesting legal case awaits the sports community if Tekinoktay takes the matter to court.

Earthquakes and Severe Weather Remain on the Agenda
Earthquake activity and weather warnings also remained among the issues followed closely across Türkiye.
On October 5, earthquakes were reported in parts of Adana and Osmaniye, including a magnitude 5.2 earthquake in Osmaniye’s Sumbas district. Authorities continued monitoring the situation and carrying out field assessments.
The Turkish Meteorological Service also issued warnings for heavy rainfall in Malatya, Elazığ and Adıyaman, with the possibility of flooding, lightning and transportation disruptions.
Türkiye Faces a Busy Autumn Agenda
The final days of the week left Türkiye with several major issues to follow into October.
The inflation figures, ongoing legal investigations, earthquake activity and the developments at Beşiktaş all remained prominent topics as the country entered a new month.
With economic data, political developments, legal proceedings and sports continuing to dominate the national agenda, October is expected to bring another busy period for Türkiye.
