Pelé’s shirt number 10 should no longer be assigned

After his death, the family wished that his former club would never again have a player with this shirt number.

In memory of his club legend Pelé, FC Santos should never wear the shirt number 10 again, his survivors wish. At least that’s what the South American TV network Globo reports.

Three-time soccer world champion Pelé died yesterday, December 29, of multiple organ failure as a result of malignant colon cancer. He was 82 years old. Between 1956 and 1974 he wore the black and white jersey of FC Santos for 18 long years, with which he twice won the South American counterpart to the Champions League, the Copa Libertadores. During his time at the Atlantic Coast club, Pelé alone scored over 500 league goals.

Due to these services to the club, which later also produced Neymar, the Pelés family wants to submit an official application to the board of directors to block the shirt number 10 from being awarded again. Santos’ number 10 is currently worn by Venezuelan Yeferson Soteldo.
