Canada<\/a> has put into effect the retaliatory tariff package it prepared in response to new US duties. The measures cover hundreds of American products, ranging from steel and furniture to textiles and consumer goods, while there has been no progress toward restarting trade talks that collapsed in late August.<\/p>\n

C$28 billion worth of goods affected<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The new tariffs apply to around C$28 billion, or approximately US$20 billion, worth of American products.<\/p>\n

Some items will face duties as high as 50%. Fresh fish and lobster were initially included, but the Canadian government later removed them from the list following objections from the seafood industry.<\/p>\n

Carney: We are ready when the US is ready<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa is seeking a durable agreement with Washington that serves the interests of both countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re ready to sit down and strike that deal when the Americans are ready,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, meanwhile, argued that the next move should come from Canada. Greer also warned that Washington could respond to Canadian retaliation by banning imports of certain Canadian products.<\/p>\n

Trump threatens Bombardier<\/strong><\/h4>\n

US President Donald Trump also targeted Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier.<\/p>\n

Trump threatened to halt all US business with the company unless it moved manufacturing operations to the United States.<\/p>\n

He also described Canada\u2019s exchange rate with the US as \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bilateral trade worth nearly $900 billion<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Trade between Canada<\/a> and the United States was valued at nearly $900 billion in 2025.<\/p>\n

The US already applies a 25% tariff on Canadian cars and trucks, along with duties on steel, aluminum and lumber. Canada\u2019s new measures come on top of earlier retaliatory tariffs on certain American vehicles.<\/p>\n

Warning over consumer prices<\/strong><\/h5>\n

While polls suggest broad public support in Canada for retaliatory tariffs, economists have warned that the measures could raise prices for everyday goods such as clothing, food and furniture.<\/p>\n

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has also urged the government to take a targeted approach, warning that continued escalation could create further risks for businesses.<\/p>\n
